I am also usually pretty good at determining directions but I think I need either to have a reasonable idea of the sun/stars or know where I started from and the directions I have travelled in (more of an inertial system than a celectial navigation system).

The one time I can recall really getting lost while driving was on a cloudy foggy day when I missed the detour sign returning me to my correct route. I didn't have a map or compass and I then got tangled up in the southwestern Ontario grid system of minor roads and ended up on the Lake Huron coast road about 30 miles south of where I was heading. I knew that I was heading west but missed out on the missing northerly component in my travel.
