The impracticality of a pocket watch if you're not wearing a waistcoat - particularly for an active child wearing rather baggy shorts or knickerbockers - would seem to me to suggest that if any of them had a watch at all it would be a wrist watch. Pocket watches may still have been popular in the thirties - after all waistcoats were still pretty standard clothing for adult men - but we're talking the 1930s here, not the 1830s and none of our child heroes would have been dressed like the Artful Dodger.
