Case 1 I was working on an oil refinery near Adelaide, South Australia when it began to drizzle - rain, not oil. A couple of my mates chided a nearby Polish worker for continuing to work outside in the fine mist. Evidently in Australia at that time everyone downed tools at the first sign of inclement weather. This man, a Polish immigrant, was wearing a white shirt and a tie. And this was in 1962.

Case 2 When we were clearing our lot to build our house, one of the men, a Canadian, was wielding a chain saw to cut up the last of the fallen trees. I noticed he, too, was wearing a white shirt and a tie. And this was in 1994.

The Pole was probably just following the custom at home, but the Canadian was definitely a throwback. I never asked him why. Somehow you don't question a man holding a running 24" Briggs & Stratton.
