On the other hand, ties (or even neckerchiefs) are, as far as I see, never mentioned again anywhere and none of the boys on the pictures in the books or on the photographs in Hardyment's book (incl. the "Hollywoods") is shown wearing a tie. (But the twentysomething Ransome is wearing one while camping and posing near his tent!)
Admittedly the pictures are often showing the children from behind. But a tie would seem ridiculous with the casual short-sleeved shirts seen on the pictures. The boys would probably wear ties during the train ride, though. (I think in the movie only John is wearing one on the train)

Even Captain Flint doesn't seem to wear a tie when in his casuals, although it's never mentioned nor denied, but then he looks scruffy enough in GN? to be mistaken for a lowly deckhand.

So I think it's meant as a joke from Roger.
