It would appear that our forebears were accustomed to some really serious work. I have seen early photographs of river ferries which carried a horse and dray and were oar-powered. Also, boats were much more of a utilitarian artifact, and expected to carry loads, not just people. Our early settlers used rowed boats to carry sheep and cattle to and from sailing ships to pasture on islands in Bass Strait.
