Given that the authors were fairly young girls, Isn't it likely that "The Canadian River Song" is what the song, whatever it was, was generically known as in the Girl Guides, Girl Scouts, or similar organization -- i.e. a campfire song that everyone knows but quite possibly no one has ever known the real name of.
