In WDMTGTS the illustration of John at the crosstrees has some thing at his left wrist.
You're right though; it doesn't look at all like a watch. And say what you like about AR's draftmanship (that one's a classic example of his awkwardness with human figures) his forensic abilities in drawing are considerable. I remember going to Pin Mill and being startled by the sheer accuracy of his illustration of the hard and the sailmakers shed.
