In WDMTGTS, the View From The Crosstrees, John up up the mast, looking for signs of land. In an early edition, the horizon plainly shows several things sticking up above the horizon; in a recent edition, the horizon is just a plain, unfeatured line, with nothing sticking up.
Seeing those spires is the whole point of John's shout of sighting land, but now the plates have lost that important feature.
