The comment is cryptic, at least to Americans. Are your father and boyfriend (and colleagues) lawyers or solicitors, and when appearing in court must they wear a different collar and tie than when in regular business attire? I understand that judges in the U.K. wear wigs but beyond that I at least have no certain information. In the U.S. I don't think separate shirts and collars have survived to this point; in fact in regular business garb ties are by no means certain any more; an open collar with a business shirt and sometimes a blazer or jacket is not uncommon especially on the west coast and/or in the IT industry.
