That's one tremendous advantage of Chinese. Maybe you don't understand what the other chap is saying, but once he writes it down, all is revealed. I have a Vietnamese friend whose English is, let's say, limited. My Vietnamese is non-existent. Both of us, however, have lived in Hong Kong, so when words fail us, we fall back on Cantonese. For southeast Asia, what a wonderful lingua franca it is. Now we're back to Latin.
