Ralph is usually just George Owdon’s “friend”, he is staying with George’s uncle (is George another orphan?), but it is not stated whether he is a Norfolk Coot like George or not. The name “Ralph” is first mentioned in BS4 (page 65).
The cyclist illustrated in BS8 (page 191) is smoking a pipe. In SD3 (page 50) Captain Flint goes “up on the fell for a smoke … Aunt Maria doesn’t like tobacco in the house”. Very progressive of her!
The motorists who twice start a fire in PP17,30 when they stop along the Dundale Road and eat sandwiches probably stopped for a smoke too; it is not explicitly stated, though Nancy says “some muttonhead visitor’s been chucking matches about” (pages 181, 335).
