But Genia read the rough draft and wrote a devastating letter to AR about it – “adventures spurious, dragged-in unconvincing, farcical” and hoped Howard (of Cape) would use the paper for reprinting others, “anything is better than to have a book to your name of which you are ashamed”.

This is a very famous story; the question is, was Genia just being a depressive Russian, which is quite possible especially given the times in which she was writing, or was the draft at that stage really poor? Does anybody know? Did AR have a major rewrite before the next version?

Whatever the truth of the matter, I'm extremely happy at the outcome; going by the number of times I re-read them (I don't think there's a better guide) PM is definitely my favourite, along with WH. However, I'm saying this from the perspective of being 69 years old, certainly not AR's target age group. I can't even remember what I thought of the books at the time; I was given them when I was about eight years old, in '48.

Maybe, with age, I have simply fallen in love with Dorothea. Reading WH, especially, I think AR had too...
