Hello Richard,

Sorry for the late reply: I've been away.

Good one! No, it isn't Palin. What I described was VERY normal for a kid living in rural or small town southern Alberta in the '40s and '50s. At 14 I drove a three ton truck all day long hauling grain from combine harvesters through fields and fording creeks to the granaries. We would brand about 100 calves every spring, and roast the Prairie Oysters on a piece of barbed wire in the branding fire. There was one cop for about 500 square miles, and I doubt if he ever left town. But, that was a long time ago. I still go back to that land at least once a year.
As an aside, my class at school started in 1948. The teachers that tought us also taught our parents, uncles and aunts, and even some of our kids. In 2010 the Class of 1960 - about 30 of us - will gather for our 50th reunion.
