Elizabeth, I too think the Walkers were probably his favourites. After all, he did base them on real children he knew. I remember reading somewhere that AR was arriving at the lake one year by train when he happened to see two red-capped girls in a boat. How true this is I don't know, but if it is, on such slender clues as this, he developed two characters, including the indomitable Nancy Blackett.However, it is probable that Nancy and Peggy are an amalgam of a number of people. As someone recently pointed out, AR wrote fiction and may not have been writing about just one character he remembered. As far as I can recall, there is only one clear instance where Nancy really holds centre stage when we enter her mind, and that is WH. Now, I fully expect to be contradicted on this, and to be inundated by many other examples in the series. As I said, as far as I can recall. . .
