Oh, yes, I had forgotten about that time--and we do definitely get some of Peggy's internal thoughts then.
I also realize that it's hard for an author to show us his characters' inner feelings by describing their actions, but if we read their thoughts we can understand their worries, their insecurities, and also their pride at certain times. This allows us a deeper understanding and thus a deeper relationship with a character. We've often been amazed at how well AR brought his characters to life for us--they feel like friends we really know, and we are humbled by seeing the places our (fictional) friends had their (fictional) adventures. This is one measure of a truly great author. AR knew when, whether inadvertently or not, we would need to know a character more deeply to become more involved in their story.
