It was (is?) certainly common in Britain and not just early in the century either! I used to suck oranges as a boy in the
late '40s, early '50s (the century's age, not mine!). You first rolled
the orange under your foot and then cut a hole about 1/2" diameter in the end where the
stalk had been and sucked on the juice, squeezing the orange more as you went to release
all the juice. It meant you did not get your hands sticky, the main reason
to this day that I don't particularly like eating oranges (unless someone
else prepares them!). An added touch was to stick a lump of sugar into
the hole before starting to suck.
