At the start of this thread there were some questions. Point v asked about the Swallow being organised on merchant lines. This was something that always irked me. The thing that gives it away is calling Susan 'Mate'. Thinking back to my sea-cadet days, I'm sure that on a RN ship this position would be referred to as 'No.1' Perhaps the fact that they were 'Explorers' encouraged the merchant navy direction.
I don't know if AR had any experience of the Royal Navy, if he had I'm sure he would have passed on it's structures and disciplines to John via 'Daddy'.
