When in doubt examine the underlying logic, as my father (who was in Polish military intelligence) used to say.
proposition 1: (Peter Duck says that) the treasure was buried 40 years ago
proposition 2: (Capt Flint says) it has been sixty years since the treasure was buried.
Therefore either the treasure was reburied at some stage, or either Peter Duck, or Captain Flint has got it wrong.
(Note the nested 'either or' ;-)
As AR used Captain Sehmel, the elderly sailor who sailed with him on Racundra's First Cruise as the model for
Peter Duck. It would appear that AR intended Peter Duck to be about 68.
