As you know this question arises quite often here, but you comment about how we all read then as children suddenly reminded me of an aspect of my childhood. I first read the books in the 1960s and continued to do so, but I can't remember of knowing of anyone else at school reading them - or them ever being mentioned (and this includes the time the BBC TV serialisation was first shown). It sounds as if your young woman too doesn't realise there are other readers out there somwhere!
