Not at all, Mike; I think you are correct. I have checked the references to spar timbers in the "Yachtsman's Bible" of the day. Claud Worth's "Yacht Cruising" (1st ed, 1911, 4th ed, 1934) and indeed a "Norway pole", suitable for small spars for a dinghy etc, was a Norway Spruce.
