My own suspicion is that the 'Four Firs' is another private allusion to the Collingwoods. The garden at Lanehead had 'Four Firs' - by which I don't just mean that there were four of them, but that they were referred to collectively, as 'the Four Firs', for example in family letters. Some of them have since come down, but some of them are still there!
