I recently bought some old Ladybird books on e-bay, including one that was part of their 'Key Words Reading Scheme'. This was volume 12c 'The open door to reading' and includes extracts from well-known children’s fiction all illustrated. My attraction to it of course was because it includes passages from S&A - John discovering the harbour on the island and the visit to the charcoal burners. What was particularly interesting are the illustrations, completely different from what we are used to. I have scanned the one of John (with appropriate copyright acknowledgement) so anyone not aware of this usage (I wasn't!) can have a look.
