My great uncle, who served first in the Canadian Expeditionary Force until he was wounded at Loos and then later decided to join the Royal Flying Corps, cleaner if not safer than the trenches, died of pneumonia in July 1918 while recovering from injuries sustained in a training crash.

It should also be noted that while the officer ranks were killed at a much higher rate proportionate to their numbers than the ordinary soldiers, in absolute numbers, far more ordinary soldiers were killed.
