I suspect that being a working journo and a jobbing writer must have had a lot to do with it. Of course he had to have the right kind of imagination, but economy of means was part of his working life for decades.
I was a journo myself, in a different field, but I couldn't have hoped to write aa he did. However, I recognize the succinctness and admire it unreservedly.
