Sorry, that should have read, over two thousand homes destroyed.
However, tonight's latest news indicates that all fires are now under control, that no more damage is to be expected, and that the most fearful fires Australia has ever experienced are now at last over.
I don't know the final figure, but the total area of land burnt was well in excess of a million acres (in fact, I understand about one-sixth of the entire area of England.)
