Absolutely, Andrew. By no means was I advocating either -- just stating the historical facts as I saw them.

Although I have used a shackle in the circumstances described, I would certainly now advocate either (a) the use of two separate bowlines, (b) a double overhand knot in the centre of a doubled sheet, or (c) the "Dutchman's method" with an eye splice and manrope knot -- in any case, a rope-made fastening, not a metal one.
