"All that mud"! Gosh, John, mud is synonymous with the Thames Estuary! A book couldn't be set there without having mud as far as the eye can see! As you correctly say, Lions and Eagles, while being inspiring creatures, are in rather short supply; unlike eels, which are very much an integral part of the area. I don't doubt that AR would have liked to develop the Eels' personalities more, but he ran out of days.
