But the mud is what makes SW special... I remember when I first read it; I knew about Thames mud, but mainly from living in London. Mud was something dangerous, something to stay out of. Its pervasiveness in the book gave SW a romantic sense of threat, of otherness, but anchored in familiarity, which is one of the essential features of AR's adventures.
