Great Northern - a difficult act to follow!

Through popular demand I have just reread J R R Tolkien's "The Hobbit" to my two boys (age 8 and 6) and am part way through The Lord of the Rings with the older one. He is also keen on Enid Blyton's various adventure books (reading himself).

Although my boys are both keen on Arthur Ransome's stories - particularly in playing the characters - I do find that the relatively slow pace in some of them makes it difficult to hold their attention. This may be due to the amount of dialogue and description, as opposed to "action". Perhaps this is sympomatic of today's faster moving world where youngsters expectations are different? Hence their preference to watch the AR videos (Sand A, CC and BS). I wonder of other parents find that their children become a little impatient or bored with the pace in some of AR's novels. I recall, now very distantly, that the SA books helped me to read independently. My mother was sometimes too busy to complete the stories and so my brother and I were forced to complete them ourselves.
