AR was clearly longing to have children - the Altounyans being the surrogates, and then there was the request to adopt Titty..

I woud agree with the idea about the Altounyan children being surrogates. Perhaps the idea could be extended further to consider that when the Altounyans moved away the books became the surrogates.

Perhaps it is worth remembering that the children's mother was Dora nee Collingwood who Arthur had fallen in love with and to whom he proposed marriage.

However if the books were surrogates, perhaps if he had children there would have been no books.
