My two kids (now 8 and 9) enjoy the "Redwall" series of books as much as the AR series - which were accompanied by lots of excited jumping around on sofas in our house, as well.
The Redwall books are about talking woodlands animals (as are, it sometimes seems, half the books written for children) in a Middle Ages sort of motif, with heroic mice and badgers battling vicious rats and weasels. (This is the one part that bothers my son, who has a pet rat that is quite a charmer.)
Note, however, that they are a little violent for small children, although bad is always stupid and always defeated.
