Iron was smelted using Charcoal which must have required much firewood

"Techniques of coppice management allowed deciduous woodlands to be maintained as renewable resources and cropped regularly. Coppice gave three or four times as much fuel as natural forest. In Furness, in the southern Lake District, the area of woodland actually expanded under the demand for charcoal for iron smelting and other uses, as land was converted from pasture to coppice. 53
