Alan, if you find our more about the Oxus books let us know. I've got Persia but not Summer. Meanwhile here are some suggestions you probably already know: Edward Eager, Madeline L'Engle, Big Tiger and Christian, L.M. Boston, Lloyd Alexander, Diane Duane's Wizards series, Call It Courage. Aside from the immediately obvious possibilities.

However as far as stuff being written right now I don't know. I could ask my granddaughters, who are 9 and 6, and avid readers (just introduced them to Swallows and Amazons, and added a set of Mike Field's maps as bait).
