Dalight saving time

Although I haven't got SW to hand, I seem to remember the Walkers waking up very early - about 4 am and seeing the sun was shining. Here, in Vancouver, even in June, the sun is not up yet. But if England didn't have Daylight Time in the 1930s, that might account for the fact that the sun was up at that early hour. Did England have Daylight Time in the 1930s?
