DST was introduced in Britain in 1907, but remember that while it makes the evenings lighter, it makes the mornings darker. You can find sunrise/set tables on the internet. According to a rather hurried check I have just done, in early August 1931, at the latitude of Carlisle, the sun rose at about 3.40 (summer time), so 4.00 is OK. I have noticed that in the far north of England and certainly in Scotland, it never gets totally dark for a few weeks surrounding June 21. Even in early August it is pitch dark only for a short time - I note that AR showed a glimmer on the horizon in his drawing 'NIGHT ON THE MOUNTAIN' in SD, Chapter 26.
