Because of our colder more continental climate, people often forget how far south many places in North America are. Here in Toronto, I am living at the same latitude as the south of France or northern Italy which is why the Niagara peninsula can produce some quite acceptable wines.
The southern tip of Florida is about the same latitude as the middle of the Sahara desert, though it is a bit more moist.
Scotland would be nestled in the middle of Hudson Bay which freezes over in winter.
