Perhaps not a book for younger children, but the one that has got a lot of eleven year olds at my local school raving is 'Northern Lights' by Richard Pullman. It is followed by 'The Subtle Knife' and we are all waiting impatiently for the third of the trilogy.
It was origonaly recommended to me by a grown up friend who then gave me a cpoy as a christmas present. A totally engrossing story and cleverly structured so that the explanation of Deamons is given in little chunks throughout the book. To prove how good it is, I was nearly late for breakfast one morning as Lara (the main character) was about to have something awful happen to her and I just had to find out if she survived.
Everyone who has read it, adults and children alike, think it is fantastic. A Whaaaaaaaa!!!!!!! book.
I have not read Harry Potter yet, but the same friend has recommended them to me, so I shall have to buy them soon; after going through AR again, and then another read of Tolkien.
