Here is my review of the latest Amazon Publication, written by Robert M. Thompson.........

Well I have just received my copy and I am absolutely delighted. The amount of detailed research that has gone into this book is quite breathtaking. We are shown, through many examples, just how the translators for different languages varied in their approach. Some took a very literal approach, trying to to do a word-for-word translation, whilst others opted to change things rather more. It is fascinating to read how Ransome's humour and puns were translated, in some languages readers were able to benefit from the wonderful "Ruth-less" play on words, whilst in others there were no suitable names and/or descriptive words and therefore the joke was lost.

Accompanying the text are many of the illustrations used in overseas editions, I was thrilled to see these and again they vary greatly from country to country, some being obviously a re-draw of Ransome's originals (some might say a direct crib) whilst others draw much more heavily on the imagination of the artists concerned. The excellent quality of the paper and printing is also of great benefit to the illustrations.

All in all this book is an absolutely splendid effort from Robert and I congratulate him on his dedication.
