Despite the careless omission of the last E from the hand written welcome sign, the 1999 Ontario Corroboree was not a bore. About thirty TARS members and friends gathered on July 25th for a day of Ransome fun at the Toronto Sailing and Canoe Club. There were some old friends who had been to previous Corroborees, a good contingent from Peterborough and some new people who were experiencing meeting other Ransome lovers for the first time.

Unfortunately there were a few missing faces but we hope they will be back next year. Once again the Dilley family were the long distance champions coming about 900 miles from Thunder Bay. How about some of you more distant Canadian (or even overseas) TARS displacing them?

The first item on the program was a "Get to Know you" question list, cribbed shamelessly from last year's Peterborough event. People were encouraged to find out who had done (or not done) some Ransome related things. Most of the categories were filled in sometimes by a number of different people but obody had walked across the Red Sea dry foot or sailed on a wherry, though the Dilley family have been on one when it wasn't sailing! Prizes of TARS pens and fruit and nut chocolate (the type Roger likes which is in squares) were awarded by drawing from those who handed in completed sheets.

The weather was a bit windy but we got some sailing done with the Quinan Martin 242 keelboat, Sara Simmons' Amazon lookalike Snapdragon and a TSCC Wayfarer, ably rigged by Emily Quinan and Tania Koleznik, proving all that money spent on the sailing lessons had not been wasted! There were no wrecks or drownings and there weren't many waves but the wind was gusty and several people managed to get a bit wet from water splashing aboard the boats. For once Lake Ontario was not too polluted and some younger swimmers got completely wet jumping off the dock and swimming from the beach. A line squall came through late in the afternoon and drenched a number of others who didn't get into shelter quickly enough!

After lunch there were a couple of indoor activities. The Cossars brought a large map of Secret Water and everyone tested their memories trying to remember the names of locations on the map. All of them were identified without having to resort to the book. Robert Dilley acted as quizmaster for the Great Northern? Challenge Quiz. He had made up 576 questions but we couldn't get through more than a fraction of them. Many of the questions were pretty tough and Robert will be publishing them gradually a book at a time in North Pole News.

Ross Cossar announced that Peterborough Sailing Club would host next year's Corroboree and a date will be set as soon as possible to allow for advance planning and we hope many more attendees. Peterborough Sailing Club is a beautiful location on Clear Lake in the Kawarthas north of Peterborough. I encourage you to try and get there.
