The best safety precaution is simply common sense.
Motorcycle helmets are compulsory in the U.K. despite this I have, on the odd occasion, enjoyed riding with the wind in my hair. My care and attention increased dramatically on these occasions. The year after the introduction of the helmet law, serious head injuries went UP, not down, something to be learnt there I believe.
