'Wars are the express trains of history'- was it Marx or Lenin who said that? Anyway, whoever they were, they were right.
Britain's relative decline (the only kind that counts) wasn't alleged; it was very real. But it started a long time ago, back in the late 19th century. All the war did was to hammer it home.
What the Empire did was to divert Britain's mental resources. Fatally.
