Can you imagine the horror of "Americanizing" the Ransome stories?
Imagine Cook not speaking in dialect. A great part of the fascination
I found reading these is that from my viewpoint as a Southern American,
the language and dialects of Ransome's stories just added to the
delights of experiencing another place and time. So some terms were
unfamiliar; well, we figured it out, perhaps from the context in
which it was used. That is a way of learning, to see new words in
this wonderful English language we share. So "beck, tarn, fells,
scree" are not American terms, but their presence is all an
important part of the wonder of it all. What a great loss it
would be, to try to experience Ransome without a "jolly" here and
there...
