I wrote alleged because some people might object to the term "decline". Buchanan's thesis is that both world wars were two parts of a 30 year long European civil war that Britain could have avoided if she had not made treaties with Belgium and Poland. We cannot say with confidence that Britain's decline started at a particular time because there are so many variables. Every time I visit England I hear about the latest tribulations, but funnily enough, the next time I visit, that particular trial has vanished to be replaced by another. Great Britain has a remarkable tendency to reinvent herself. This is something that can clearly be observed by an infrequent visitor such as myself. I don't think the English give themselves enough credit for having such a tremendous ability to survive. They may grumble a bit, but there's always afternoon tea and cricket on the green. For my part, I am proud to call myself English. I wouldn't have it any other way.
