The link below is to a Google scan of Six and Eightpence, a play by Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree published in 1900.

At the end of the play the main characters Cyril and Grace pay the fee of six and eightpence to Mr. Crook, "an eloquent lawyer". They are twopence short in cash and make up the amount with two penny stamps rather than a postal order.
