Peter,
Much in what you say. I never knew my father, he died when I was very young. I remember feeling sorry for the other lads because they had this heavy-handed gruff man around the house telling them what to do and what not to do, whereas I was free to do pretty much what I liked. The masters at school were the gruff heavy-handed lot and I disliked them for their control. I was never so happy as when my mother and I crossed the stormy north Atlantic on the Aquitania. A sudden gust of wind blew my red school cap, the symbol of my servitude off my head and whirled it away into the waves. Thus was the last link with authority broken and I turned my gaze westward to the new world where all would be different. And it certainly was.
