Excellent post John, really evocative. I think we should hear the rest of the story.
It's my understanding though that, AR believed that he was a disappointment to his own father because of his short sightedness and general clumsiness. AR's father died when AR was at school so, AR never had the opportunity to prove himself to his father.In the stories, John's desire to do what he imagines Daddy would think right is supposed by some to be a representation of AR's own feelings.
I'm afraid I can't quote chapter and verse on the authors of this theory but I seem to remember it as the theme of a radio play called, I believe, 'The Voyage of the Swallow'. I'm sure fellow Tarboardistas will be able to correct my errors.
