Gosh, this discussion makes me feel old! I have been reading Tarboard since 1997, and the "What's your favourite AR book?" topic must have recurred 5 or 6 times. That's to be expected - it's the question all AR devotees ask each other when they meet.

I recall from previous discussions that there was a sizeable body of opinion that the favourite book is always the one you are currently reading. Some truth in that, but my perennial favourite is Pigeon Post. For me it is at the apogee of AR's writing career. All his books are good, but the line on the graph goes up from S&A until it reaches a peak in PP. In PP the action starts with the very first sentence and it never lets up. The whole plot (including sub-plots) is as tight as a drum.

AFter PP, the graph line goes gently down, dipping at GN? I am afraid that The Big Six, an excellent children's detective story in itself, is tainted for me by the word which Peter Ceresole has unfortunately repeated. Yes, I know it was in currency when AR wrote the story, but I still feel uncomfortable when I read it. (By the way, this word has also been debated many times on Tarboard - nothing new under the sun . . .)
