Andy, you hint at an interesting point to this discussion, and one that I cannot remember having been raised (which alas! doesn't mean that it might not have been).

The evocative quality of AR's writing seems to have three aspects:

(1) To those who upon reading AR found his writing evocative of a place they already knew, either in the past or when reading
(2) To those who upon going to the places, found that AR's writing, which they had previously read, was very evocative of their new-found experiences
(3) To those who have never managed to get to those locations, but still appreciate the evocative nature of AR's writing (and are usually willing to grant they have a rooted place in reality)

In my case, I read the books and found them wonderfully evocative of places is really hoped were real three decades before I was able to go there and dip my fingers into the lake myself.
