I'm sure you're right; it shines clearly through WH, BS and PM. And I suspect that's why I like them so much; she's such a splendidly rounded person; she seems to become his voice. And of all the characters, she's the one that has humour.
Roger is given funny moments, but Dorothea is the only one that has irony; 'Your taste in tulips has become proverbial in my country.... (I really do like them)...' '"Oh it's you, Dot. You did give me a jump." "Well, you ought to hang out a notice when you're not there."'
