Andrew, you make a very strong point.
Perhaps, it is time for two editions (in much the same way as the Harry Potter series - there is an edition with 'adult' covers for when they read them on the train etc!) But the full edition should include an explanation and discussion by someone such as Christina Hardyment or Hugh Brogan who know the works.
I think this is one of those rare occasions when decisions have to be made on a case by case basis (usually I would agree with - I think it was Nietzsche - Only have laws that can be applied universally)
